📞 Call Now: 0125 624 2410Moss is not only cosmetic. It holds water against the tile surface, blocks valleys and lifts flashing edges — but on a roof that is already failing, clearing it is treating a symptom.
When it is not the answer: If the tiles beneath are eroded to exposed aggregate, clearing moss buys time but the surface will re-colonise fast. On those roofs replacement is the honest recommendation. Read the full guide.
Gutter cleaning sounds simple and is frequently done badly. A proper clean means every run cleared along its full length, not just the accessible sections. It means the debris removed from site rather than flushed into the downpipe, where it settles into a compacted plug at the first bend. And it means every outlet and downpipe tested with water afterwards to prove the system actually flows.
We clear by hand from ladder access or by gutter vacuum with camera on higher runs, depending on the property. Debris is bagged and taken away. Downpipes are then jetted from the top and checked at the shoe for flow. Where a blockage sits deeper in the run we rod it rather than leaving it for next year.
The part most firms skip is the report. While we are up there we can see the fascia condition, the state of the gutter joints, whether brackets are pulling away, whether moss is building in the valleys, and whether tiles at the eaves course have slipped. We photograph anything that matters and tell you — without turning it into a sales pitch. Most cleans result in no further work recommended, and that is a perfectly good outcome.
Properties backing onto the Petty's Brook green corridor and the belt between Binfields Farm and Razor's Farm carry the heaviest deciduous leaf load in Basingstoke. Mature oak, ash and sycamore drop from late September through November, and the sheer volume overwhelms standard leaf guards within a single season. Hanmore Road, Cufaude Lane and the Binfields Farm estate roads all need twice-yearly clearing.
Oakley's northern and western boundaries back directly onto mature woodland. The debris load here is different in kind, not just quantity — alongside leaves come twigs, seed cases, bark fragments, moss dislodged from branches, and squirrel-cached acorns that jam outlets solidly. Fine-mesh guards are worth fitting on the woodland-facing elevations specifically.
Overton has the densest village tree canopy in our coverage area and the River Test running through it. The humidity means debris that lands in the gutter stays wet, rots down into a sludge, and holds moss and algae that grow inside the gutter itself. Winchester Street and Station Road properties frequently need the gutter scrubbed rather than simply emptied.
Tadley Common presents an unusual problem. The debris is fine — heather fragments, pine needles, sandy grit blown off the heathland — and it passes straight through standard leaf guards before compacting into a dense sludge at the outlets. Bishopswood and Franklin Avenue properties often have gutters that look clear from the ground and are functionally blocked at every outlet.
Black Dam's enclosed position between the A339 ringway, the railway line and mature vegetation traps moisture. Gutters here do not just collect debris — they grow moss and algae internally. Essex Road, Norfolk Road and Suffolk Road properties regularly need the gutter interior scrubbed and treated, not just cleared.
These newer estates were planted out in the 1990s and 2000s, and that planting is now reaching roof height for the first time. Properties that genuinely needed no gutter maintenance for their first fifteen years now do. If you have not had your gutters cleared since moving in, and there are established trees within ten metres, it is due.
All prices include every run cleared, debris removed from site, downpipes jetted and flow-tested, and a written condition report with photographs of anything that needs attention.
We do not pressure wash gutters or roofs. High-pressure water damages tile surfaces, forces water under laps and can dislodge ridge and verge mortar. Hand clearing and vacuum are what we use.
Key Fact: HSE guidance under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 places domestic gutter clearing among the most common causes of serious ladder-related falls, and recommends that work above single-storey height be carried out from a suitable platform or by trained operatives. Book a gutter clean before the autumn rush. Annual and twice-yearly plans available.
Call 0125 624 2410Clear steps from first call to completed work. No call-out fee, no obligation, and a written quote before anything starts.
Call and tell us your property type and whether you have trees nearby. We advise whether annual or twice-yearly clearing suits your situation and quote accordingly.
Every run cleared along its full length. Debris is bagged and removed from site, never flushed into the downpipe where it forms a plug at the first bend.
Each downpipe is jetted from the top and checked at the shoe. Deeper blockages are rodded rather than left. We prove the system flows before leaving.
We report on fascia condition, gutter joints, bracket security, valley moss and eaves tiles. Photographed, honest, and with no pressure to book further work.

We check moss coverage and, more importantly, the condition of the tiles beneath it. That determines whether clearing is worth your money.
Manual clearing and biocide treatment, with copper or zinc strip fitting quoted separately as optional prevention.
Every tile scraped by hand from ridge downward. We never pressure wash — it strips the tile surface and forces water under the laps.
Valleys cleared completely and checked for cracked lining underneath, then all debris bagged and removed from site.
Professional biocide across the treated area, and copper strips fitted where you want the moss-free period extended.
| Job | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Terrace roof | 2–4 hours |
| Semi-detached | Half a day |
| Detached | 1 day |
| Copper strip fitting | +2 hours |
| Biocide treatment | Included, same visit |
Biocide needs a dry spell after application to work properly, so we schedule treatment against the forecast rather than applying it before rain.
Moss clearing runs from roof ladders on most Basingstoke housing. Scaffold is specified for: steep pitches, three-storey elevations, and any roof too fragile to take a roof ladder safely - always itemised in your written quote, never a hidden extra, and we arrange it.
Most Basingstoke estate housing has generous verges and driveway space, so scaffold and skips drop straight onto private ground. The older streets around the Top of Town are the exception, with narrow frontages and controlled on-street parking. Pavement scaffold and skip permits go through Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council; allow a few working days on streets like Wote Street, Church Street, New Street where space is tight.
| Job | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Terrace roof | £200–£350 | Manual clearing plus biocide |
| Semi-detached | £250–£400 | The most common job |
| Detached | £350–£550 | Larger area, more valleys |
| Copper strip fitting | £150–£300 | Extends the moss-free period to 5–7 years |
| Gutter clear add-on | £80–£150 | Usually needed at the same time |
| Biocide treatment only | £120–£220 | Where clearing is not yet required |
Worked example: Full clearing, biocide and copper ridge strips on a semi on Essex Road, Black Dam, where the enclosed microclimate drives fast regrowth — £520 including VAT in a day.
No deposit on moss removal — payment on completion once you have seen the finished roof. All prices include VAT.
Covering RG21, RG22, RG23, RG24 and surrounding postcodes.
We guarantee the clearing work and the correct application of treatment. Moss regrowth itself is a natural process, not a defect — copper strips are the honest long-term answer.
If a fault appears in covered work, we come back and put it right. No quibbling, no re-charge.
Moss debris falls into gutters and onto the ground below. We sheet planting, clear the gutters as part of the job, and bag everything off site. You do not need to stay home for external work - we just need power and access agreed in advance.
Clearing runs year-round. Biocide application needs a dry window, and spring is the most effective time as moss is actively growing. Basingstoke sits on chalk downland at around 80 metres, so drying is quick after rain but frost nights run longer than the Hampshire coast.
"Our house backs onto Petty's Brook and the leaf fall is relentless. They come twice a year now, clear everything, jet the downpipes and send photos. Never had an overflow since we started."
"Gutters looked fine from the ground but every outlet was solid with that fine heathland grit off the common. They cleared it and fitted fine mesh on the exposed side. Proper diagnosis."
"Moss was growing inside the gutters, not just sitting in them. They scrubbed and treated the interior as well as clearing. £140 for the whole house and a photo report."
£80–£110 for a terrace, £100–£140 for a standard semi and £130–£190 for a detached property. That covers all runs cleared, debris removed from site, downpipes jetted and a written condition report.
Annually as a minimum, in late November after the main leaf fall. Properties near heavy tree cover — Chineham's Petty's Brook corridor, Oakley's woodland edge, Overton's riverside plots — need twice yearly with a spring clear added.
No, and we would advise against anyone who does. High-pressure water damages tile surfaces, forces water beneath tile laps and can dislodge ridge and verge mortar. We clear by hand and by vacuum, then jet the downpipes only.
We report honestly on fascia condition, gutter joints, bracket security and eaves tiles, with photographs. Most cleans result in nothing further recommended. We are not going to invent work to justify the visit.
Near heavy tree cover, yes — fine-mesh guards can extend clearing intervals from annual to every two or three years. On the Tadley heathland fringe, standard guards are ineffective because the debris is too fine, so fine-mesh specifically is the answer.
Single-storey gutters are feasible with a stable ladder and a second person footing it. Anything above single-storey height should be done from a platform or by trained operatives — HSE data puts domestic gutter clearing among the most common causes of serious ladder falls.
Yes. Annual or twice-yearly plans cost £170–£240 per year for a semi and include priority booking, photographic reporting and a modest discount on the standalone rate. Most Chineham and Oakley customers take the twice-yearly option.
